The first Theme Time Radio Hour hosted by Bob Dylan

in May 2006 featured 18 beautiful tracks, only five of which had been

recorded by white artists. Even more remarkable was the inclusion of four

gospel recordings among the 18 songs chosen by Bob Dylan. Three of

these were black gospel numbers from the 40s, 50s, and early 60s,

the fourth one was a 1928 Carter Family classic. It is obvious here

that the radio show host is the same man, who also said in 1997:

"Those old songs are my lexicon and my prayer book. All my beliefs

come out of those old songs, literally, anything from 'Let Me Rest

on That Peaceful Mountain' to 'Keep on the Sunny Side.' You can find

all my philosophy in those old songs. I believe in a God of time and

space, but if people ask me about that, my impulse is to point them

back toward those songs. I believe in Hank Williams singing

'I Saw the Light.' I've seen the light, too."

Below are the lyrics of those four songs underlined in the playlist.

After the Clouds Roll Away
The Consolers

Oh what a beautiful morning (oh yes it is)

The sun was shining very bright

Deep in my heart I'm so happy (oh yes I was)

And everything was going alright (oh yes it was, children)

But before the day was over (oh yes)

Cloud had covered the sky (yes it has)

But God had promised, though the rain may fall

I know, the sun will shine after a while (that's right)

Oh, lift up your hand my brother (oh yes)

You know, try, try not to cry (oh yes)

You know, into each life some rain may fall

But the sun will shine after a while

You know I have no way of knowing (oh no I don't)

You know trouble may be waiting along the way (oh yes)

You know I have no way of knowing (oh no I don't)

You know all I can do is watch and pray (that's what my Bible tells me)

Lift up your hand my sister (oh yes)

Trouble won't last all the way (no it won't)

Do you believe that after the clouds pass over your head

And there gonna be a be a brighter day

Didn't It Rain
Sister Rosetta Tharpe

Tell me didn't it rain, rain, rain, children,

Rain, oh my Lord?

Didn't it (yes), didn't it (you know it did)

Didn't it (oh oh my Lord), didn't it rain?

Tell me didn't it rain, rain, rain, children,

Rain, oh my Lord?

Didn't it (yes), didn't it (you know it did)

Didn't it (oh oh my Lord), didn't it rain?

Well it rained forty days, it rained forty nights

There was no land nowhere in sight

God sent a raven to bring the news

He hoisted the wings and away he flew

I said it rained, you know it rained

Oh hard rain, it rained too long

Night rain, rain all day, rain all night

Day rain, night rain, mmh it rained

Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain

Rain, rain, rain, children,

Rain, oh my Lord

Didn't it (yes), didn't it (you know it did)

Didn't it (oh oh my Lord), didn't it rain?

Tell me didn't it rain, rain, rain, children,

Rain, oh my Lord?

Didn't it (yes), didn't it (you know it did)

Didn't it (oh oh my Lord), didn't it rain?

Well, it rained forty days and forty nights without stopping

Noah was glad when the water stopped dropping

When I get to heaven, sitting right down

Asking Jesus for my starry crown

I know it rained, I'm tired of it raining

It's raining too long, it rained all day, all night long

Rain rain, go away, come again some other day

You know it rained, oh hard rain, God knows it rained

Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain

Rain, rain, rain, children,

Rain, oh my Lord

Didn't it (yes), didn't it (you know it did)

Didn't it (oh oh my Lord), didn't it rain

Uncloudy Day
The Staple Singers

Oh they tell me of a home

Where no storm clouds rise

Oh they tell me of a home

Far away so far away

Oh they tell me of a home

Where no storm clouds rise

Oh oh they tell me

Of an uncloudy day

Well well well (yes oh yes they tell me)

Lord they tell me now (yes oh yes they tell me)

Ah ah, I got a home (yes oh yes)

I got a home (they tell me) beyond the sky (yes oh yes they tell me)

Well well well (yes oh yes they tell me)

Oh they tell me (yes oh yes they tell me)

Of a home (yes oh yes they tell me)

Far far away (yes oh yes they tell me)

Ah uh yeah (yes oh yes they tell me)

Lord they tell me now (yes oh yes they tell me)

Well where no storms (yes oh yes they tell me)

Where not storm clouds rise (yes oh yes they tell me)

Well and oh oh oh they tell me (oh they tell me)

Of an un- (of an un-) of an uncloudy day (-cloudy day)

Keep on the Sunny Side
The Carter Family

There's a dark and a troubled side of life

There's a bright and a sunny side too

Though we meet with the darkness and strife

The sunny side we also may view

Keep on the sunny side always on the sunny side

Keep on the sunny side of life

It will help us every day it will brighten all the way

If we keep on the sunny side of life

The storm and its fury break today

Crushing hopes that we cherish so dear

Clouds and storm will in time pass away

The sun again will shine bright and clear

Keep on the sunny side always on the sunny side

Keep on the sunny side of life

It will help us every day it will brighten all the way

If we keep on the sunny side of life

Let us greet with a song of hope each day

Though the moment be cloudy or fair

Let us trust in our Savior always

To keep us every one in His care

Keep on the sunny side always on the sunny side

Keep on the sunny side of life

It will help us every day it will brighten all the way

If we keep on the sunny side of life
