Oh, Lord above, can't you hear, hear me cryin'?

THAT LUCKY OLD SUN

Up in the morning, out on the job

Work like the devil for my pay

But that lucky old sun has nothing to do

But roll around heaven all day

Fuss with my woman, toil for my kids

Sweat 'til I'm wrinkled and gray

While that lucky old sun has nothing to do

But roll around heaven all day

Good Lord above, can't you see I'm pinin'

Tears in my eyes

Send down that cloud with the silver linin'

Lift me to paradise

Show me that river, take me across

And wash all my troubles away

Like that lucky old sun give me nothing to do

But roll around heaven all day

Oh Lord above, can't you know I'm pinin'

Tears in my eyes

Send down that cloud with the silver linin'

Lift me to paradise

Show me that river, take me across

And wash all my troubles away

Like that lucky old sun give me nothing to do

But roll around heaven all day

Wash all my troubles away.

Written by Beasley Smith (music) and Haven Gillespie (lyrics), "THAT LUCKY OLD SUN" was recorded by Bob Dylan in early 2014 for the studio album “Shadows In The Night”, which was released in January 2015, and which features ten standard ballads written from 1923 to 1963. The closing song "THAT LUCKY OLD SUN" is the only song from “Shadows in the Night” which Bob Dylan has performed on stage before recording it for this album.

However the latest of those live appearances before the 2014 studio recording had been already back in June 2000, when Bob performed it for the first time since 1995 (the fourth time since 1986, a year which had seen more than twenty live performances of this gem). The live debut of "THAT LUCKY OLD SUN" had been even earlier, in Illinois, in September 1985, during "Farm Aid". One of the finest "early" live performances had been the the first one after 1986, in Madison, Wisconsin, on November 5th 1991.

On Saturday, July 11th 2015, a very lucky audience in San Sebastián, Spain, was treated to the first live performance of "THAT LUCKY OLD SUN" in more than fifteen years. What is more, this was not not only the first appearance on stage with the new "Shadows In The Night" arrangement, but also the European debut of this beautiful song. Unfortunately it remained the only performance of this gem during the European summer tour of 2015; and "THAT LUCKY OLD SUN" was also not performed at all during the European fall tour of 2015.

However the first Bob Dylan concert in 2016, in Tokyo, Japan, on April 4th, included a very beautifully sung "THAT LUCKY OLD SUN"; and more than eighteen months after that, on October 25th 2017, during the US fall tour, Bob Dylan chose to perform "THAT LUCKY OLD SUN" as the last song of his concert in Saint Paul, Minnesota,

Biblical references:

~ Psalms 102 ~

Hear my prayer, O Lord; let my cry come to you! Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress! Incline your ear to me; answer me speedily in the day when I call!

~ Psalms 39 ~

"Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; hold not your peace at my tears! For I am a sojourner with you, a guest, like all my fathers.
