STAY WITH ME

Should my heart not be humble

Should my eyes fail to see

Should my feet sometimes stumble

On the way, stay with me

Like the lamb that in springtime

Wanders far from the fold

Comes the darkness and the frost

I get lost

I grow cold

I grow cold, I grow weary

And I know I have sinned

And I go, seeking shelter

And I cry in the wind

Though I grope and I blunder

And I'm weak and I'm wrong

Though the road buckles under

Where I walk, walk along

Till I find to my wonder

Every path leads to Thee

All that I can do is pray

Stay with me

Stay with me

Written by Jerome Moross (music) and Carolyn Leigh (lyrics) for the 1963 motion picture "The Cardinal", “STAY WITH ME” was recorded by Bob Dylan in early 2014 for the studio album “Shadows In The Night”, which was released in January 2015, and which features ten standard ballads written from 1923 to 1963.

On October 26, 2014, at the end of the last of three shows in Hollywood, California, Bob Dylan performed "STAY WITH ME" for the first time on stage. Bob Dylan chose to close all 26 subsequent concerts of his North American fall tour as well with amazing performances of "STAY WITH ME", sometimes while standing center stage, but mostly while sitting at his piano.

In 2015 Bob Dylan also chose "STAY WITH ME" to close all 28 concerts of his US spring tour. During the European summer tour of 2015, the European fall tour of 2015, and the Japan spring tour of 2016 "STAY WITH ME" has not been performed at all.

But after almost fourteen months, at the last four shows of the US summer tour of 2016, "STAY WITH ME" reappeared as the closing song of the set. And a few months later, in November 2016, Bob Dylan chose to close the last ten concerts of his US fall tour with "STAY WITH ME".

Biblical references:

~ Psalm 51 ~

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. ... Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. ... The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

~ Psalm 139 ~

O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you. For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you. ... Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!

~ Isaiah 53 ~

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

~ Matthew 18 ~

What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.

~ Luke 15 ~

He told them this parable: “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. ...

And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.
