WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN I was standing by my window, On one cold and cloudy day When I saw that hearse come rolling For to carry my mother away Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by There's a better home a-waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky I said to that undertaker Undertaker please drive slow For this lady you are carrying Lord, I hate to see here go Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by There's a better home a-waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky Oh, I followed close behind her Tried to hold up and be brave But I could not hide my sorrow When they laid her in the grave Will the circle be unbroken By and by, Lord, by and by There's a better home a-waiting In the sky, Lord, in the sky |
PERFORMANCES July 14, 2019 - Kilkenny, Ireland "WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN" was performed by Bob Dylan in The Home Of Bonnie Beecher in May of 1961. It was also recorded by Bob Dylan during the Basement Tapes sessions in 1967, and was released in 2014 as track 8 on disc 6 of "The Bootleg Series, Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes Complete". The song had previously been recorded by The Carter Family in 1935, and by The Staples Singers in 1960. It was also recorded in 2014 by Mavis Staples as the closing song on her album "Have A Little Faith". The song however had not been performed on stage by Bob Dylan since May of 1976, in Houston, Texas, when Neil Young walked out on stage in Kilkenny in July of 2019 in the middle of Bob Dylan's set, in order to join Bob Dylan in his European debut of this old classic. I had the privilege to be present during this huge stadium event, standing only 8 meters behind the rail, hitting the record button in time to capture this special treat (see video above). |
